Hardscape for your Aquarium

What is actually meant by Hardscape?

Even if the term comes from English, its definition is native to Asia, more precisely to Japan. In German, it means natural decorative materials that have a certain material hardness. This includes different stones, woods, roots and occasionally bones. All of these hardscape elements are also necessary if you want to recreate a near-natural water landscape and that is what the Aquascape is all about. On the other hand, natural decorative materials, which have a soft material in their nature, are called "softscape". This then includes all kinds of plants.

Easy to remember: hard = hard material + scape = landscape
Easy to remember: Soft = soft material + scape = landscape

The term "Iwagumi" is a sub-designation. This is an aquascape that uses stones as a hardscape.

An aquascape (water landscape) always consists of softscape and hardscape elements.
The primary aim is to create a water or swamp landscape that is as natural and authentic as possible.

In order to make it clear again at this point how necessary a hardscape is, we are using the example of specific epiphytes (epiphytes) that are to be positioned submerged (below the surface of the water). Here you can see our popular Bucephalandra, which with its rhizomes needs a stone or a root to grasp in order to grow. As you can see an elementary necessity, you want to recreate nature in the aquascape.
